Serena Williams continues to push her legacy both on and off the court, establishing the Serena Williams Design Crew in 2021 in partnership with Nike. The thought had been brewing in Williams’ mind for quite some time, with the idea now coming into fruition and uplifting new voices that can help forge the future of design. With a range of Nike footwear already on the crew’s resume, the next silhouette that they had set their eyes on was the ‘90s Basketball icon, the Air More Uptempo.
The Uptempo has had a range of different makeovers over the years, but this edition from the SWDC has taken the silhouette in a completely new direction. Capturing a similar feeling to what the Denham x Air Max 95 “Black Volt” managed to achieve, the combination of denim and neon yellow stitching truly gives this pair a contemporary finish. Parts of the signature “AIR” panels are cut away, playing into the deconstructed aesthetic which has conquered the industry over the last few years. The front toe and heel incorporate Sashiko embroidery, an interesting feature that is coupled with the towelled canvas on the tongue. Finishing off the pair is the pillowy Nike Swoosh on the heel, which along with the purple tab on the side wall, further indicates a collaborative presence.
The Serena Williams Design Crew has really harnessed its unique set of talents on this Nike Air More Uptempo, similar to how Olivia Kim transformed both the Air Footscape and Air Mowabb in 2019.
