The folks over at Nike’s ISPA (Improvise, Scavenge, Protect, Adapt) Division have returned with a “Barely Volt” edition of its Mindbody. The silhouette is right down ISPA’s experimentalist avenue and embodies the move towards a future of environmentally conscious footwear. While the division’s current lineup is not exactly easy to rock, its priorities are paving the way for the industry and more importantly, the sneakerheads who have yet to come.
The ISPA Mindbody’s design is heavily centred around biodegradability, which basically means, how easily can the shoe break down once it hits the landfill. Official details about the construction has yet to be revealed by the Swoosh, however, a third-party biomaterials company called Living Ink has confirmed that it was involved in the development process. Living Ink specialises in producing carbon black ink drawn from algae, suggesting the knit upper was partially dyed with the eco-friendly substance. Similar to the ISPA Link, the Mindbody boasts a unique bonding thanks to a complex wiring system that holds the midsole and upper together. This removes the need for any heavy stitching or harmful glue-related chemicals, decreasing the shoe’s overall carbon emissions.
