It’s back to the drawing board for another archival silhouette from the 3-Stripes as Yohji Yamamoto and his Y-3 ensemble bring out their experimental toolkit once again. Born in 1979, The Marathon TR has had a long and varied history, with its unique Trefoil-inspired grip catering to the trail running category which ironically, had hardly any traction at the time. Over four decades later, the Marathon timeless tooling still lends itself to new innovative takes, engulfed in Yamamoto’s wild world of imagination.
Having seen many a retro over the years, including some neon coloured size? exclusive editions, the shoe is set for an unconventional make-up on this Y-3 iteration. Gone are the standard mesh underlays, a smooth canvas swapped in instead, playing to the silhouette’s lifestyle fanbase. Loose threads hang off the side wall Stripes, similar to the Y-3 Superstars that are also set for a release in 2023. Sashiko stitching can be found overlaying the 3-Stripes branding, a feature that complements the Dellinger webbed midsole, even if it only serves an aesthetic purpose. As usual, Y-3 branding can be located on the heel, with the block logo font debossed into the nappy black suede.
The Y-3 Division is set up for a strong year as the current selection boasts a number of unconventional takes on classic adidas silhouettes. Stay tuned to The Sole Supplier while we wait on an official release date for this Marathon TR!
