The Supernova looks to the stars with this space-themed makeover, playing into the technical elements of the 2000s runner in the process. adidas has only released a few colourways on the COS Supernova since its retro release, most of which have been slow to make their way into the hands of sneakerheads. This “Silver Blue” is an interesting colourway that serves up the runner with an intergalactic dynamic and should definitely be enough to rival the likes of Nike’s Zoom Vomero 5 and Saucony’s ProGrid Triumph 4.
This latest arrival of the silhouette imagines the shoe as though it had been worn on a faraway planet and expresses that concept throughout the shoe. The shoe explores this theme through the “hand-dyed upper treatments and stone washing to mimic the wear-and-tear they would likely receive if they were used in that environment”. While the aged hue of blue is used all over, features such as the bottom eye stay and the adiprene heel unit provide a necessary pop of colour. On the toe box we can see a mini adidas logo in neon yellow, with the chemical equation for Methane written next to it. Methane, a substance which is visible to us when captured in its frozen form, gives us an insight into the inspirations behind this particular “Silver Blue” design. Underneath, the outsole tread pattern reflects the same hits of neon and orange via the torsion support system, a key piece of design from adidas that enhances support. Two extra laces are included if you wish to play on the neon elements that are scattered on the upper and would amplify the sci-fi element behind the shoe’s story.
